Swim Lessons: The How Not To Guide

Wonderful experience tonight! BLM went to swimming lessons! Whoo hoo! Fun in the pool and some structured learning!

Not so much.

Swim teacher wasn't wearing her swimming costume.
Swim teacher proclaimed "free swim".
Swim teacher sat on her chair and observed her clipboard for 15-20 minutes.
Swim teacher did not notice that one of the swimmers was struggling. The Mother to the struggling swimmer had to yell at the instructor. The instructor calmly walked to the ladder and asked the kid to use his arms. How helpful! How non-stressful for the Mother!
Swim teacher took a pee break during free swim.
Swim teacher stood with her back to the pool while having conversation with the mother of the non confident swimmer boy who struggled.

I talked Chandler into leaving early. We can swim better than that. Hell- we did teach her how to swim at the lake this summer.

It is not OK with me that a kid floundered. I'm going to call the university tomorrow and report that swimming instructor. How can it be OK to have young swimmers in the pool with no adult in the water with them? That's NOT OK.

Hi there - just peeking in on your blog. I was a swim instructor back in my high school days, and it is definitely NOT okay for this instructor's behavior. NEVER do you leave children unattended (seriously, a pee break in the middle of class?)! In fact, my rule was no kids in the pool until I was in the water. Please report this person!! Children's lives are at risk!!

I would throw the biggest mommy fit if Diva's swim instructor did that! I agree, you deserve a refund and apology.

Dude, so totally not right! What a danger and liability.

B & K took swim lessons last year and learned from some great instructors. They were nothing like that.

OMG! You should definitely DEMAND a refund. I AM a swim instructor at the Y and we take our lessons very seriously. There is a curriculum, protocol all that kind of stuff. We never turn our back on a child and a pee break? I'd be fired! Considering it's a life or death situation when you're teaching a child to swim, right?

I'm glad you guys left early and that no one was hurt. What an asshole. Please let us know what happens when you report her!

Lurker here...that is crazy behavior from a swim "instructor." How was she thinking they were going to learn from her observations? Crazy. Not sure if you have a Swim America franchise near you but they taught my girls and did a fabulous job. There were several instructors, not just one. They learned how to swim after only a few lessons.

Oh, hell no. She needs to be fired. I would be beyond pissed at paying for that, and don't even get me started on my reaction if I were the mother of the floundering child!

Report her. Seriously. Before someone gets hurt.

Holy! That sounds like a Sat. Night Live skit. She must have "S" for brains. The creep, she needs a mama to tear her up one side and down the other. ...with that said, have a great day! Love KB

Hi! i have your blog bookmarked from the Bargain Board. I always love reading your posts. Well your blog is just as fun!

I so agree that non swimming instructor should find a job elsewhere....

I would write more, but my own 3 kiddos are starting to battle.....

what a swim teacher! I feel bad that you didn't find the swimming lessons worth it because of the instructor.
